Medford man whose guns were taken by police wants them back
March 11, 2010
The Medford man whose firearms were seized by police for safekeeping Monday when he was taken into protective custody has asked for their return.
David J. Pyles has asked police to return the items taken from him when a SWAT team and negotiators descended on his Effie Street home early Monday. He sent an e-mailed request today, forwarding copies to legislators and media outlets.
Medford police said they were watching the Effie Street home starting Sunday night in response to law enforcement concerns about the man after he was placed on administrative leave from his job on Thursday.
A Medford police news release described him as disgruntled and said police knew he had legally purchased several firearms over two days. Police identified the guns as a Heckler & Koch .45-caliber handgun, a Walther .380-caliber handgun and an AK-47 rifle.
In what police described as a “proactive” move, they wanted to defuse the situation before people started their daily routines on Monday.
The guns, along with another handgun and a shotgun the man also owned, were seized for “safekeeping” Monday, police said. The man was taken to Rogue Valley Medical Center for a mental-health evaluation, police said. He was released several hours later.
Now, Pyles wants his property returned.

The stupidity of these people. Amazing. Left to his own devices he might have just bought his guns, gone to the range, they could have watched him from a distance, since they felt the need to watch. Now he has had his rights violated, he is now probably angry, and now what are they going to do? Do you think these people will now feel safe not watching him? These people are paranoid, they create enemies by going after innocent people, and then they always have to be on watch. Bully societies are just like that.
I hope he sues the pants off of them. Now that he has had a mental examine, can his employer still put or keep him on a list to be watched? I would like to see him interviewed, but the media should be covering the process, legal or otherwise that was used to allow this to happen to this man. If it can happen to one, it can happen to others.
He should tell his side of the story. Also people should be asking questions about what exactly can get people placed on watch, and how employers are using these powers, in conjunction with the state.

They can bs all they want, but eventually he is going to get his guns back, and in this paranoid society he is what going to be on watch? But he has a psych examine and was cleared, so should he expect set up’s, entrapment? This will be an interesting story to keep an eye on. They took all his guns, guns that he already owned, now he has nothing for home protection, and they want him to wait several weeks to get them back? He needs to get his health records to see what’s now on his files. Targeted for a thought crime, arrested by the swat team no less and put into protective custody, for what he might do.
This experience must have been not only humiliating, but traumatizing, and then the state wants to make sure that people like this can not get angry and do anything harmful to others. Does it ever occur to them that they create their own problems at times. I hope he can get a good lawyer, I think many around the net would give him their moral support, in regards to what’s has happened to him. America was built on freedoms, the American people were given a republic, if they could hold onto it.
